What’s an EBM?

WHEN you first hear someone say EBM, you d be excused to think it s a new startup computer company or some new kind of cheap hard drive for your PC on the market.

But it s nothing of the sort. In fact, it has nothing to do with technology as we know it.

What EBM stands for is - brace yourself - Evidence-Based Medicine.

Huh?

It is a medical movement based upon the application of scientific methods to medical practice, recognizing that many long-established medical traditions are not yet subjected to adequate scientific scrutiny, according to Wikipedia, the user-edited online encyclopedia.

EBM has gained much popularity since the early 1990s. In keeping with this trend, over 300 doctors and medical specialists from the Kingdom and the Gulf region will convene for the 2nd annual Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) conference and workshop on April 2-5 at the Al-Ahsaa Intercontinental Hotel in Al-Ahsaa.

The conference is jointly organized by the National Gulf Center for Evidence-Based Medicine, King Abdulaziz Hospital, and the National Guard Health Affairs (NGHA). Dr. Bandar Al-Kanawy, Chief Medical Officer at NGHA, will deliver the keynote address.

The theme of the conference is Meeting the Challenges in EBM Education.

The conference will focus on the latest trends in evidence-based medical practices in the Kingdom, particularly those of the King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, as well as the organizational setup of the National Gulf Center for Evidence Based Medicine which was established in early 2004.

International speakers, including Professor Gordon Guyatt of the McMaster University of Canada, will address the conference. They will present the latest developments in EBM and how the Kingdom could benefit from those experiences.

In less than two years of operation, the National Gulf Center for Evidence Based Medicine was able to gain recognition as the EBM referral center for the Kingdom and the Gulf Region from the GCC Ministers of Health. It was able to form an affiliation with the Evidence Based Clinical Practice Group, McMaster University, Canada, headed by Professor Guyatt, one the pioneers in EBM practice.

The center has also established collaborations with eight different EBM working groups from the different regions of the KSA and with different EBM centers in the Gulf Region such as the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain and Sultan Qaboos University in Oman.

The practice of EBM is gaining popularity in the Kingdom through the initiative of the center, which is aimed to promote the concept and practice of evidence-based medicine in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and in the GCC countries.
